SOCIAL STRUCTURE

Medium: Cotton Balls and Ropes

Size: 44.6x81x133 cm

This work reveals how a society is structured with the relationships between people. Under the influence of Nicholas Christakis’s chart, I decide to use the cotton balls to represent individuals, because I want to talk about human in general, without the limitation of races, genders, ages or any thing that separate us from one another. Japanese often use red lines as a metaphor of the hidden destiny between people. Since this hidden destiny is very similar to the relationships that is mentioned in my work, I figure it will be understandable to use red rope to connect each cotton ball, in attempting to make it easier for the viewers to recognize this work as the metaphor of social networks.

I place this work at the left corner of the room, not just because the angle between two walls helps to create a sense of space and reinforce the 3D effect, but also because by placing it beside the Crystallisation of Society I, it shows the audience the connection between these works and helps better understand the meaning of the repetition.
